Artistic vs Commercial

This is my artistic photo.  This is artistic because it gives the viewer a glimpse into the daily life of this girl.  Also, the photo is not trying to sell anything.  The girl looks very sad in this photo and it seems as though the girl's mind is off somewhere very deep in thought.  I like this photo because she is unaware the photo is being taken and the lighting is effective.

This is my commercial photo.  The girl looks very posed and the purpose of this photo is to sell the dress and magazine.  This is a commercial photo also because the viewer can't tell anything about the girl from this photo and her smile isn't completely genuine.

Natural Beauty

Beauty is something that is different for every person.  Thus comes the phrase "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder".  I believe beauty can take many different forms.  I think nature is especially beautiful because it's untouched by humans.  That is exactly why I think nature is very pure and relaxing.  When I see something beautiful in nature I feel very calm and serene.  I also want to have everyone I love with me to see the beautiful something and at the same time there's something special in experiencing nature alone.  Whenever I see beauty in nature I get this feeling of wanting to stay in that place forever listening to the sound of waterfalls and/or animals.  I like to imagine what the place would've looked like 100 years ago.  And that is what I think experiencing beauty in nature is.

This is one of my favorite photos of nature because when I first saw it, I immediately wished I was at the place (Which is Plitvice, a National Park in Croatia)

Portraits

I think this is my most successful portrait because it best captures how the subjects feel.  To achieve this photo, I used the framing technique of filling the frame.  I cut off Alvaro's (on the right) hair and ear and Kayla's ear to have the photo's focus be entirely on their facial expressions.  They both look very content and happy to be with each other.  The lighting of this photo was all natural.  It came from a window to the left of the subjects.  To edit this photo, I brought down the exposure, then I slightly turned up the darks.  Then I made it a tad bit soft and gave it a sepia tone to give the photo a warmer and classical feeling.  Lastly, I added in quotes that each one said about the other as to give the viewer the full of effect of how madly in love they are.

Photo Effects

This image is an example of the photo effect called Daguerreotype. Daguerreotype is a direct-positive photographic process that was used in the 1800's. It is done by putting a detailed image on a silver plated copper sheet sensitized by iodine. Then the image is then developed using heated mercury. To edit this photo, I added two different textures and made them very opaque. Then I added a third texture which created the black frame of my photo.  I took this photograph in my back yard. I like this one a lot because of the content. I think it looks like a wild chicken which is funny to me and I like the use of rule of thirds.

This is an example of the tilt-shift effect.  The tilt-shift effect uses lens blur to selectively blur a certain area of a photo which creates a shallow depth of field and gives the effect of everything in the photo looking miniature.  I took this photograph on the hill where Pittock mansion is.  Then I created this image by blurring everything surrounding the middle tower in the photo.  I love this picture because lots of people in Portland know exactly where it is because of the two blue towers in the upper right corner, and so they can recall how it actually looks.  I especially love how the river in the background adds to how small everything around it looks.

Light Shadow Reflection

This photograph demonstrates my best photo with reflection as a subject.  I like this photo because of how the rocks contrast with the water.  I also think the sun gives the photo a happier, more tranquil feeling.  The subject matter in this photo is organic.  If there wasn't a reflection off of the rocks in the foreground one might only notice the tree.

This is my photograph using the chiaroscuro technique.  Chiaroscuro originated from the renaissance and is a photo/painting technique used to show a dramatic contrast between dark and light.  To achieve this contrast one must shine light unevenly on a subject while the rest remains dark.  Because the light is on the object unevenly it makes the tone more creepy and eerie.  The harsh contrast of light and dark makes the light part of the chair pop.  The lighting makes the structure stand out while hiding the rest of the chair from us, which makes a familiar object seem mysterious.

This is an example of a photograph where the subject is lit up.  The lighting in the background creates a disturbing tone because it's hard to picture where we (as humans) would fit into the photo.  The light also serves as a way to distort how far away the sun appears to the human eye.  Because the leaves are right in front of the sun it seems as though the sun was very close.

This is my best shadow photograph.  The lighting is very florescent and not orange like the sun which I think makes the tone of this photograph more somber.  Also, because of the dark edges of the photo and because the subject is a common house hold object; it seems as though this could be a photograph right before a murder scene which adds to the disturbing mood.

This silhouette image is of a tree in my backyard.  I like this photo because the lines of the tree are made very apparent because of the backdrop of the sky.  The colors of the sky as the sun sets are very beautiful and make the tone of this photo very tranquil and calming.  Because there aren't any bright or complementary colors in the photo it makes this photograph very easy on the eyes.

Panorama, HDR, Blend

This is my blending picture.  To achieve this photograph I took three pictures with the same setting, but different subject.  Each subject has their hands in a different position to create a modern picture of the vitruvian man painting.  In light room I made a preset for the photos.  I turned down the exposure and created a slight split toning of the pictures' colors.

This is my panoramic shot.  I thought it would be interesting to try doing a grocery store because it's not a typical landscape photograph.  I find this panorama kind of funny because there's an actual person in the picture and I liked all the natural colors from fruit. I also liked the contrast of the natural fruit with the processed/packaged bread.

I really like this HDR photo because I was able to almost re-create exactly what I saw which I find very amazing.  I think it's really great that by taking different photos exposed for different colors, we are able to capture the photo as we saw it.  This photo uses three main colors, the light green in the grass, the dark green in the trees, and the blue sky.  To get this picture I took three different pictures, one exposed for each color and then blended them together.  I think this photograph is nice because people can tell which way the sunlight was coming from.

Motion Pictures

This is a picture of my best total motion photo. To acquire this photo I had my friend play the piano, and then I set my shutter speed to about 5 seconds. I created motion by moving the camera diagonally.  This is my best photo because the camera shake is meaningful. It makes it seem as if the piano and it's surroundings are disappearing.  I like that people can tell that her hands were moving.

This photo illustrates freeze action. To capture this, I made my shutter speed really fast.  Then I had my younger sister throw the soccer ball into a tub of water.  This was the first photo I took and I was really lucky to get it just as it hit the water. I think it's my best picture because it demonstrates freeze action really well because the water was moving very fast.  I also think it's a very unique shot.

Another motion technique is panning.  To achieve this panning shot, I set my shutter speed to about 1/60.  Then I had my sister and dog run across the forest in my back yard.  I believe it is my best photo because it shows the rule of thirds and landscape quite well.  I think it's interesting because it has two subjects moving across the frame.

This picture was done with a really slow shutter speed.  In order to get this photo, I put my camera on a tripod and then used the self timer.  Then I held a flashlight and made circles around myself.  Then I also moved to make myself look ghostly.  I like picture because it demonstrates how people can play with light in a dark room and long shutter speeds to make very interesting and unique images.

Diptych/Tripdych

These images relate because they have the same subject.  But in each photo the subject is in a different position.  Both images have relatively the same effects done to them with a slight vignette.  I like this picture because I saw a story to this diptych.  On the left someone set out strawberries and then decided to take a bite out of one.  I love how the colors pop out of the white snow.  To create this image I turned up the saturation a little bit in the red of both strawberries and then turned up the brightness.

These three images show different seasons of the same place.  They all have a slight vignette and are tinted blue.  They relate because it's the same place shot from different angles.  I like this picture because it seems simple at first, but when looked at again there's a lot going on.  I cropped three different pictures of the same place to make this triptych.  I also love this picture because it reflects the weather in Portland because all of these shots were done in the course of a few days.

Best Shape Photos

I like this picture because it's very seasonal.  It uses asymmetry that gives it a slightly off balance feel, which I believe actually enhances it's over all balance.  I also like the contrast of the organic shape of the stems with the spherical/geometric shape of the berries.

This picture has radial balance.  There is the a nice contrast between the black and white space.  It uses organic shapes and has an interesting texture with the lines.  I think this picture is beautiful in its simplicity.

This picture uses radial symmetrical to create a balanced photo.  It's centered around a geometric circle shape.  I like this photo because the green light draws someone in and it's mysterious because people question what it is.
